Grant Morrison's Abject Heroes

Invited talk, The Higher Literary Seminar, Department of English, Stockholm University

“Grant Morrison’s Abject Heroes” reads Grant Morrison’s comic The Filth in terms of Julia Kristeva’s concept of abjection. The comic, says Morrison, is about how “the shabbiest, shittiest life you can live,” one defined and limited by shame, guilt, fear, hatred, and loneliness, “can be redeemed into glory by the power of imagination.” This paper will argue that it is by exposing his readers to the abject that Morrison subjects them to what he calls a “healing inoculation of grime.” In this way, the filth of shame is transformed into glory.
