Description

A bespoke workshop filling in the blanks of one tradition through the tools of the other.

Using both traditional material and compositions from Anna Lowenstein's debut album, Through The Walls, this workshop introduced Klezmer music (traditional Eastern-European Jewish music) to music students and the wider public.

The workshop brought MA Classical String Performance students of the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance into contact with Klezmer music to explore ideas about how traditional music can inform classical ensemble playing. By examining concepts such as swing, micro-timings, tone production, and the functional roles of music in contexts, Anna aims to break down the unfortunate divide often found in both Classical and Traditional music, challenging the perception that neither has anything to offer the other.

The public was invited to observe and take part in Q&A.

This workshop was presented by the MA Classical String Performance programme (André Swanepoel, Course Director) at the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance, University of Limerick in affiliation with the Irish Chamber Orchestra and H.I.P.S.T.E.R. (Historically Informed Performance Series, Teaching, Education and Research), co-directed by Dr Yonit Kosovske, and with support from the Arts Council of Ireland and Limerick Arts Office.
