Research Interests

Synthesis of coordination and organometallic compounds, covalent organic frameworks (COFs), metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), MOF-derived structures, and other nanostructured materials for applications in catalysis, electrochemical CO₂ reduction, and battery electrodes.

Biography

Abdallah Mahmoud is a chemist specializing in coordination and organometallic chemistry, catalysis, and nanomaterials for energy applications. He is currently a Research fellow at the Bernal Institute, University of Limerick (Ireland), supported by a prestigious Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowship from the European Commission.

He earned his Ph.D. in Chemistry from Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon (Portugal), where he graduated with Distinction and Honour. His doctoral work focused on developing homogeneous catalytic systems in aqueous media.

Over the past decade, he has built a distinguished research record, with work focused on the design and synthesis of coordination and organometallic compounds, covalent and metal–organic frameworks (COFs and MOFs), and MOF-derived nanostructures. These materials are tailored for applications in catalysis, electrochemical CO₂ reduction, hydrogen evolution, and battery electrode development.

He has held multiple postdoctoral positions at Instituto Superior Técnico and the University of Nova de Lisboa (NOVA FCT), contributing to national and European-funded projects in sustainable catalysis and energy conversion.

In addition to his research, he has been actively involved in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate courses in catalysis, spectroscopy and chemical engineering.

He continues to pursue innovative strategies toward sustainable catalysis and high-performance materials for energy storage and conversion, aiming to bridge molecular chemistry with real-world energy technologies.
