Biography
Ailish Hannigan is Head of Department of Mathematics and Statistics and Professor of Biomedical Statistics at the University of Limerick. She started her research career as a Research Fellow in Biostatistics in University College Cork, focusing on new statistical approaches to the analysis of data from clinical trials. She joined UL as a lecturer in Statistics in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics before moving to the School of Medicine in 2012. She returned to the Department of Mathematics and Statistics to take up the position of Head of Department in 2025.
Her research interests include statistical methods for routinely collected data from health information systems, data literacy and participatory approaches to quantitative health research. Current projects include data mining of clinical records for research in primary care, longitundinal analysis of cohort and registry studies, and promoting data literacy in the community. She is also a member of MACSI, the Health Research Institute and the Particpatory Health Research Unit in UL. She is passionate about statistics education and has received an Excellence in Teaching Award (Special Commendation) from the University of Limerick.
