Research Interests
My current research is in the area of designing and evaluating interventions to optimise health and prevent falls in older people and people with Parkinsons disease and the role of technology in rehabilitation. I have a special interest in the role of arts-based interventions for health and wellbeing. I also have an interest in evaluating pedagogy and assessment practices in higher education.
Research Projects: PI on Health Research Board (HRB) Joint Transnational Working Group Call (2024) and international study exploring the use of digital technologies in neurodegenerative disease research and clinical practice: MotiVerseP: Motivation for movement-focused therapies in a metaverse for Parkinson’s disease. PI on the HRB-funded DIFA music and movement for health. WP lead in the European Network for FALL Prevention, Intervention and Security (E NOFALLS). I was also on the joint steering committee for the European networks for falls prevention: Prevention of Falls Network for Dissemination (ProFouND: http://profound.eu.com: 21 partners from EU 12 countries and 10 associate member countries) and E-NOFALLS: http://e-nofalls.eu, (18 partners from 10 EU countries).
I am designated an inventor of a therapeutic device for neck pain (FLEXOR): European patent number 13195184.0-1654. This is the product of an interdisciplinary project supported by Enterprise Ireland Commercialisation Fund.
Biography
I am Professor in Physiotherapy in the School of Allied Health at the University of Limerick. My current programme of research includes the design and evaluation interventions to optimise physical activity, health and wellbeing, and prevent falls in older people and people with neurological conditions and the role of technology in rehabilitation. I have a keen interest in the role of arts for health and in particular the benefits of music and dance for health and wellbeing. I also have an interest in lower limb injury and sports performance, including movement analysis, and assessment of physical performance.
I was Course Director of the BSc in Physiotherapy and graduate entry MSc in Physiotherapy programmes in the University of Limerick and have an interest in evaluating and optimising teaching, learning and assessment practices in higher education, including interprofessional education.
I previously worked clinically as a physiotherapist in the UK in the Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals, NHS Trust, the Whittington Hospital, NHS Trust London, UK and the Wellington Hospital, St. John s Wood in London.
