Research Interests

My interests centre on the analysis of discursive, classificatory and physical violences, particularly those motivated by prejudice. My current research focuses in particular on gender-diverse persons experiences of hostility and minorities' access to justice. I am a co-director of the European Centre for the Study of Hate at the University of Limerick. My research has been funded by the European Union and the Irish Research Council. I am currently engaged in the following funded projects:(2022) All Island Network for Challenging Hate (with Jennifer Schweppe, Ross Macmillan, Kevin Brown), funded by New Foundations/Shared Island, Irish Research Council. (2020) 50 Years of LGBTI+ Activism in Ireland: Social Forces and Legal Change (in partnership with GOSHH, with Jennifer Schweppe and El Reid), funded by New Foundations, Irish Research Council.(2020) NETHATE: Network of Excellence of Training on Hate (led by TCD), funded by Horizon 2020 Marie Skand#322;odowska-Curie Actions (ITN). Teaching Interests

My goal as a lecturer in sociology is to support students to develop their disciplinary literacy. This foundation offers a coherent approach to knowledge and knowledge production, which gives students the capacity to act confidently in the world in a critically reflexive manner and provides a solid footing from which to embark on interdisciplinary collaborations.My teaching interests align with my research interests in crime and social control, victimology, and methodology.I currently deliver the following modules:SO4056: Hate Crime: Roots Realities and Redress.SO5031: Qualitative Research MethodsSO4006: The Sociology of Crime Deviance and Social ControlSO4238: Sociological Perspectives on Criminal Justice

Biography

Dr. Amanda Haynes is a Professor of Sociology at the University of Limerick, Ireland. Her research interests centre on the analysis of physical, discursive, and classificatory violences, and their relationship to prejudice. Her current interests centre on hate crime, policing, stigma and minority access to justice. She has been published in high-ranking journals such as New Media and Society. Her published works include the edited collections Critical Perspectives on Hate Crime: Contributions from the Island of Ireland (2017, Palgrave Macmillan). Her work has been funded by the European Commission, the Irish Research Council, and the Irish Council for Civil Liberties. Amanda s commitment to her students was recognised twice by the University of Limerick, where she was awarded the Excellent in Teaching Award in 2005 and 2011. Following her service on the executive committee of the Sociological Association of Ireland, she was elected President of the Association for the 2008 term.
