Biography

Dr Andrea Ryan is an Associate Professor at
the School of Law, University of Limerick. Her research expertise lies in the areas of EU criminal justice, the European Convention on Human Rights, criminal evidence, comparative criminal procedure, criminal law and sentencing. She has published widely in these areas, including a book with Routledge, Towards a System of European Criminal Justice -The Problem of Admissibility of Evidence. She has acted as national expert for Ireland on a number of cross-jurisdictional studies funded by the European Commission, and was a Member of the Academic Network on a recently concluded project: Strengthening Trust in the Justice Area through Mutual Recognition and the Streamlined Application pf the European Arrest Warrant' coordinated by Centre for European Policy studies (CEPS) (June 2023). She was the Irish expert on a study on the prospects for the creation of a European public prosecutor, and a feasibility study on the creation of a database on investigations and prosecutions.
She has been project leader on a number of international and national projects including a project on the Victims Directive conducted by the Centre for European Constitutional Law (CECL), a study on sentencing practices in the District Court for the Judicial Studies Institute and a study on domestic violence for the Royal Irish Academy. She is a Committee Member of ECLA UK, and frequently participates in Workshops and Conferences on European criminal justice. She has written various articles on criminal justice in journals including European Papers, International Journal of Evidence
and Proof, Criminal Law Review, Irish Criminal Law Journal, Judicial Studies Institute Journal , Dublin University Law Journal. She is a member of the Garda College Accreditation Committee and the
Quality Assurance Board for the Garda training programme, the BA in Applied Policing.
