Research Interests

My research centres on implementation science, with a particular focus on understanding how evidence-based interventions can be effectively adopted, scaled, and sustained within complex social systems. I am especially interested in how programmes designed to improve outcomes for vulnerable populations, such as young people in contact with the justice system and families experiencing poverty, can be implemented in ways that reduce inequalities and promote long-term wellbeing. This work often involves examining large-scale social policy initiatives and community-based interventions, using theory-driven approaches to understand what works, for whom, and under what circumstances.

Methodologically, I draw on mixed-methods designs that integrate qualitative and quantitative approaches to capture the complexity of implementation processes. In addition, my work incorporates sociological perspectives, particularly Bourdieu’s concepts of habitus, capital, and field, to explore how social structures and power dynamics shape implementation and influence service delivery.  Across all of my research, I aim to bridge the gap between evidence and practice, generating insights that support organisations and policymakers in delivering interventions that are not only effective in controlled settings but also feasible, equitable, and impactful in real-world contexts.

Biography

Andy  is a facilitator, researcher and practitioner specialising in implementation science especially in complex social settings. His work focuses on understanding how evidence-based programmes can be effectively adopted, scaled, and sustained within real-world settings, particularly in areas related to youth justice, child poverty reduction, and community development. Andy has extensive experience leading and contributing to multi-site evaluations of large-scale initiatives, including projects examining onboarding processes for housing programmes and interventions designed to improve outcomes for children and families.

With a professional background in justice and youth justice, Andy brings a strong applied perspective to his academic work. He works closely with organisations to build capacity for evidence-informed decision-making, supporting teams to embed implementation frameworks and develop robust evaluation strategies. Andy also designs and delivers training workshops for both academics and organisations, helping participants translate theory into practice and apply practical insights to real-world challenges. His learning and development work signals a strong applied focus while demonstrating the ability to bridge the gap between research and practice.

Andy’s academic research draws on sociological theory, particularly Bourdieu’s concepts of habitus, capital, and field, to explore how social structures and power relations shape professional practice and organisational change. This perspective underpins his current PhD research, which is in the correction phase following his viva. His doctoral study examines the development of youth justice and the changing practices within detention settings. This work strengthens both his theoretical and applied expertise in implementation and justice reform, offering insights into the dynamics of policy change and the challenges of embedding new approaches in complex systems.
