PhD projects

Based on my research interests, potential PhD projects could include:

Investigating the impact of tailored nutrition care pathways on the health outcomes and quality of life of older adults. This could involve designing and testing personalized nutrition interventions and assessing their effectiveness in diverse populations.

Exploring the barriers to food security among older adults, with a focus on socio-economic, cultural, and geographic factors. This project could involve both qualitative and quantitative research methods to identify key challenges and develop targeted strategies to overcome them.

Evaluating the role of community-based programs and policies in improving food security and nutrition for older adults. This might include assessing the effectiveness of existing programs and proposing new, innovative approaches to enhance their impact.

Developing and implementing educational interventions to improve nutrition literacy among older adults and their caregivers. This project could measure the effectiveness of these interventions in promoting better dietary choices and overall health.

Assessing the long-term outcomes of integrating nutrition care pathways into primary healthcare settings for older adults. This project could involve a comprehensive evaluation of patient outcomes, healthcare costs, and system-level changes resulting from this integration.

Investigating the relationship between food security and chronic disease management in older adults. This research could examine how improving access to nutritious food can influence the management and progression of chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases.

Exploring the potential of technology-based solutions, such as mobile health applications and telehealth, in delivering nutrition care and support to older adults. This project could evaluate the feasibility, acceptability, and effectiveness of these technological interventions in improving nutrition outcomes.

Personal profile

Research Interests

My research interests focus on the development and optimization of nutrition care pathways for older adults, aiming to enhance their health outcomes and quality of life. I am particularly interested in addressing the challenges of food security within the realm of public health nutrition, exploring innovative strategies to ensure that all individuals have access to adequate, nutritious food. By examining the intersection of nutrition care and food security, I aim to contribute to the creation of comprehensive, equitable public health policies and practices that support the well-being of older populations.

Teaching Interests

I was delighted to be selected as 2021 Education and Health Sciences winner of the Individual Teaching Excellence Award! My teaching is strongly underpinned by a concept of professionalism. Within a two-year timeframe, dietetic students undertake academic modules covering theoretical and core content knowledge that integrate with practice education whereby students apply the theory they have learned in a clinical environment. Therefore, I have embedded community engaged learning within the taught modules that I lead. The students complete academically relevant learning activities with partner organisations and then critically reflect upon their experience. This allows the students to make a meaningful impact in the community while building professional skills before entering the workforce. This lived experience, self-reflection and motivation to work in a real-life setting has been fundamental to the students understanding and development of a sense of professionalism.
