Biography

Aoife was awarded a BSc from Trinity College Dublin and an MSc from University College London prior to the completion of her PhD at the University of Limerick. Aoife was successful in being awarded one of six highly prestigious HRB-funded PhD Scholarships in Health Services and Population Health Research as part of the SPHeRE Programme. Prior to working in academia, Aoife worked extensively as an SLT, a health services manager and as an expert witness at SEN tribunals in the UK related to school based supports for children and young people with speech, language and communication needs.
  

Research Interests

Aoife is an implementation scientist and qualitative researcher in the field of human communication. She leads on several research projects related to inclusive health, education and justice. She was a member of an international consortium with researchers at the University of Oxford that transformed how speech, language and communication needs in childhood are classifed and diagnosed internationally. She is national lead in knowledge translation efforts to facilitate the uptake of the findings from this work into policy and practice. Aoife is currently leading on the qualitative strand of a mixed methods NIH funded project exploring gender- related service inequities. She is UL lead on two HEA funded EDI studies aimed at implementing gender-informed workload allocation models to support women in academia. Aoife represents Ireland as a management committe member of a COST Action (CA22139 - Justice to youth language needs: human rights undermined by an invisible disadvantage (Y-JustLang). 

Teaching Interests

Aoife completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching, Learning and Scholarship at UL in 2021. She has over ten years of third level teaching experience. She teaches a range of topics related to childhood speech, language and communication development, health services and population health. Aoife teaches inter-professional (IPE) modules across the School of Allied Health and is visiting lecturer at Mary Immaculate College, contributing to the PG Diploma in Inclusive and Special Education, and the B.Ed in Inclusive Education. In 2020, Aoife led on the design and delivery of the only approved inter-faculty qualification programme for Intermedaries internationally, funded by the Department of Justice. Her teaching research focuses on embedding the role of the service user in curriculum development and design.
