Biography
Brendan holds a Ph.D. in Taxation from the University of Limerick (UL), Ireland. He was supervised by Professor Elaine Doyle (UL), Professor Joan Ballantine (Ulster University), and Doctor Michelle O Sullivan (UL). Brendan holds a Masters Degree in Taxation as well as a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Law and Accounting, both from the University of Limerick. He is the holder of several professional qualifications, being a Chartered Tax Advisor (received from the Irish Tax Institute, ITI), Qualified Financial Advisor, Retirement Planning Advisor and Pension Trust Practitioner (all received from the Life Insurance Association, LIA). Prior to returning to academia in 2016, Brendan worked for 10 years as a tax practitioner for Grant Thornton Chartered Accountants. His primary research focus is employee voice, in tax and the other traditional professions, and most of his research is qualitative in nature. Over the years, he has been invited to present his work at several national and international academic conferences, including the 2023 Critical Perspectives on Accounting conference, held in Bogota, Colombia. In addition to his research, Brendan has been teaching taxation at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels since 2016, in subjects including corporation tax, personal tax, and capital taxes. In his lectures, he aims to bring his 10 years of practical experience into the classroom in order to create the most engaging student experience possible. He has also supervised numerous research projects at undergraduate and master's levels. Over the years, he has contributed to his university and the wider discipline in multiple ways. Most recently, he was appointed as the UL Kemmy Business School representative to the UL Student Retention Working Group and was elected as the UL representative to the Irish Accounting and Finance (IAFA) council.
