Research Interests

Bróna's research interests span corpus-based discourse analysis, spoken discourse across (different contexts including academic settings), English language teaching and learning, and sociolinguistics. Her work, to-date, has largely involved looking at smaller, specialised sociolinguistic-oriented corpora to explore more functionally-motivated linguistic variation across social groups. 

Her more recent work explores the role of corpus linguistics in the exploration of academic focus group data and looks, in particular, at the discourse of doctoral mindsets amongst students on an international doctoral programme.

Biography

Bróna Murphy is Associate Professor in TESOL/Applied Linguistics in the School of Modern Languages and Applied Linguistics at the University of Limerick, Ireland. Here she is involved primarily in doctoral supervision but also contributes to teaching in applied linguistics and English language teacher education predominantly at postgraduate level. She is a member of the Centre for Applied Language Studies (CALS) Research Group at UL as well as a member of the Inter-Varietal Applied Corpus Studies (IVACS) Research Group. Her research interests include corpus-informed discourse analysis, spoken discourse (different settings), and corpus linguistics.
