Biography

Dr. Donal Canty is a Lecturer in Initial Teacher Education at the University of Limerick. He is qualified as a Post-Primary Teacher of Graphics and Architectural Technology and has taught Construction Studies, Technical Drawing, Materials Technology (Wood), Technical Graphics and LCA Graphics and Construction at Post Primary level (1996 2004). He is currently lecturing in Subjects Pedagogics at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in the University of Limerick.  Donal is a director of the Technology Education Research Group (TERG).  He was principal investigator on two research projects that examine the use of electronic portfolios and the use of Adaptive Comparative Judgment in second level education in Ireland.  Donal was the PI and coordinator for the GRASS project (Grading Soft Skills) which is a 3-year Life Long Learning (LLP) research project financially supported by EU focusing on the assessment and grading of Soft Skills. The consortium consists of four Universities and 4 schools from across Europe. Donal is also a member of the National Spatial Skills Research Network that is focused on the enhancement of STEM Education at a national level. He has also been an invited speaker at the Educators Summit 2013 (Microsoft: Aviva Stadium) Title: Assessing e-Portfolios using Adaptive Comparative Judgment (ACJ) and the International Winter School (Structured PhD in Education, University of Limerick), Title: Adaptive Comparative Pairs as Assessment for Promoting Critical Pedagogy. Donal has also successfully supervised both PhD and Masters students to graduation in the area of Design and Technology education.
