Research Interests
Eddie's primary research interest is in the area of employment law, in particular the regulation of intermittent workers and the Gig Economy. Eddie completed his PhD - Regulating Irregular Work - in 2025 and has published articles on various aspects of employment law in national and international journals (e.g. the Irish Jurist, The King's Law Journal, European Labour Law Journal, etc.). Eddie is also interested in researching in wider commercial law (e.g. trade secrets) and tort law topics and has published articles in both areas of law.
Along with his publications, Eddie has presented papers at several leading national and international conferences (e.g. the global Labour Law Research Network biannual conferences, the Society of Legal Scholars annual conferences and the Irish Association of Law Teachers annual conferences) as well as being a convenor/speaker at events organised in the University of Limerick.
Teaching Interests
Eddie's teaching interests are primarily in the areas of labour law and trade law. Eddie designed and continues to be the module leader for the Law of International Trade Organisations postgraduate module and the International Labour Law postgraduate module. At undergraduate level Eddie has taught a variety of modules, and is the current module leader for the School of Law's Labour Law module and the Equality and Diversity in the Workplace module.
Biography
Eddie Keane is an Assistant Professor in the School of Law. He completed his LLB in Law as a part-time evening student in 2003, his LLM in European and Comparative Law in 2005 and his PhD (on the topic of Regulating Irregular Work) in 2025.
Since 2004, Eddie has worked with the University of Limerick School of Law School, initially as a Teaching Assistant, before becoming a permanent member of faculty in 2010.
Eddie’s primary research area is employment regulation, in particular the regulation of atypical work relationships and his research is published in leading Irish and international law journals. Eddie has presented at national and international conferences and is a regular contributor to media outlets, including national TV, as well as local, national and international radio.
Eddie contributes to the local community through his engagement with the Limerick Citizen's Information Service, and CPD Philanthropy (providing Continous Professional Development seminars for legal practitioners). Eddie also contributes to the University of Limerick in his role as a Designated Contact Person, as well as his role as the AHSS representative to the KBS Faculty Board.
Having held a variety of directorship roles in the past in the School of Law, Eddie is currently its Director of International Education; Erasmus/Study Abroad Academic Coordinator; Course Director for the LLB in Common and Civil Law; Course Director for the Graduate Certificate in Equality, Diversity and Inclusion; and co-Course Director for the BA in Law and Accounting.
