Dr. Fernanda Zamboni is originally from Brazil and holds a degree in Pharmacy from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul. She moved to Ireland in 2014 to pursue a Master’s degree in Biomedical Device Materials at the University of Limerick, supported by the highly competitive Government of Ireland International Education Scholarship. She graduated with First-Class Honours in 2016.
In 2021, Dr. Zamboni earned her PhD in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Limerick. Her doctoral studies were funded by the Irish Research Council Postgraduate Scholarship and further supported by an ERASMUS+ Traineeship grant, which enabled her to conduct part of her research in collaboration with the I3B’s Research Group (Biomaterials, Biodegradables and Biomimetics) at the University of Minho in Portugal.
Following her PhD, Dr. Zamboni was awarded the prestigious Irish Research Council Postdoctoral Fellowship for a two-year research project. During this time, she spent one year at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, where she worked in the Department of Chemical Pathology at the Prince of Wales Hospital. She later pursued a second postdoctoral position at the Queensland University of Technology in Australia.
In July 2025, Dr. Zamboni was appointed Assistant Professor at the School of Engineering at the University of Limerick.
Dr. Zamboni has made significant contributions to the field of biomedical engineering. She secured over 200K euro in individual research funding, and she has published 4 book chapters, 19 peer-reviewed articles, accouting for over 700 citations, and an h-index of 14. She serves as an Early Career Editorial Member for Springer-Nature In Vitro Models journal, and she is a peer reviewer for journals such as Journal of Biological Macromolecules and Current Research in Translational Medicine. In addition, she has participated in numerous national and international conferences, contributing 39 abstracts and receiving two awards for her work.
