Biography

Giles Warrington is  Professor (Chair) of Human Performance and Innovation in the Department of Physical Education and Sport Sciences (PESS) in the University of Limerick. Giles is co-director of the Sport and Human Performance Research Centre based at the University of Limerick.  He previously worked for 10 years in the School of Health and Human Performance at Dublin City University. Prior to taking up his academic role at DCU in 2006, Giles worked for 12 years at the National Coaching and Training Centre as Head of Player/Athlete Services. Giles was also previously employed by the British Olympic Association, where he worked as a sport and Exercise Physiologist at the British Olympic Medical Centre. Giles is a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine and a Sport Ireland Institute accredited Performance Physiologist. His research interests focus on chronobiology and sleep science, determinants or human performance, environmental physiology and performance physiology in particular weight category sports. He has published 92 peer reviewed journal articles and over 100 conference presentations and abstracts. For the past 14 years, Giles has been the scientific research coordinator of an extensive research programme commissioned by the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board  investigating the effects of chronic weight regulation on physiological and cognitive function and health in jockeys. From 2002-2017 Giles was also Performance Physiologist and Sports Science adviser to the Olympic Council of Ireland and was a member of the Irish medical team at the Athens, Beijing, London and Rio Olympic Games. For over 30 years Giles has worked extensively with and advised elite and developmental athletes and their coaches from a wide range of sports.
