Biography

Dr. Gopi Battineni is a postdoctoral researcher at Lero – the SFI Research Centre for Software, University of Limerick, Ireland. He is currently engaged in the FORGE project (Federated Offline Reflection Grammatical Evolution), which focuses on developing privacy-preserving multimodal learning systems. This project integrates Grammatical Evolution and federated learning techniques to create secure, interpretable machine learning models capable of learning from sensitive, distributed data sources while ensuring user privacy. As part of this work, Dr. Battineni contributes to synthetic data generation and model generalizability, with a strong emphasis on healthcare-related AI applications.

With a robust educational foundation and extensive research experience, he has cultivated a strong expertise in machine learning, medical informatics, and data mining. He completed his PhD in 2021 from the University of Camerino (Italy), with specialization of machine learning applications for the diagnosis of chronic diseases, clinical research, text mining of medical documents, and health data mining. Dr. Battineni Internationally recognized for his academic excellence, has been listed among the top 2% of scientists in the world (Stanford University ranking) for four consecutive years, from 2022 to 2025. He has authored over 100 peer-reviewed scientific publications (had >6500 citations with H-index of 38), in reputed high impact journals and two of his research works were featured as cover stories in the Infectious Diseases Journal and Technologies. He was also awarded the title of Best Student Coordinator for his commitment to academic mentorship and student engagement.

Dr. Battineni has led and participated in several prestigious research grants. From 2018 to 2021, he served as the principal investigator of the Marine Doctor project, funded by ITF Trust (UK) and the International Radio Medical Centre (Italy), which focused on AI based telemedical solutions for maritime workers. Between 2022 and 2024, he has been the principal investigator of the Marche Biobank initiative funded by the European Union under POR MARCHE FESR. He also leads the OSPIEMARE project (2022–2024), a medical observatory for seafarers, supported by the Italian Ministry of Health. In 2022, he was awarded a UNICAM post-doctoral fellowship for research on artificial intelligence and machine learning applications in diagnosing neurodegenerative disorders.

Dr. Battineni is frequently invited to speak at international conferences and academic events. His notable presentations include a talk at the Cross-Border Continuous Medical Education forum in Brussels (2018), a guest lecture at the International Maritime Health event in Hamburg (2019), a presentation on AI at ICART in Malta (2020), a paper presentation at Bio Imagining proceedings in Madrid (2021), a neuroscience forum at the International Conference in Paris (2022), a session at the Public Health Congress on Maritime Transport and Ports in Naples (2024), and a lecture on AI applications in healthcare during a faculty development program in India (2025). Dr. Battineni’s research interests include machine learning, medical informatics, neuroimaging, federated learning, and the MRI image-based analysis on diagnosis of serious global diseases like Cancer and Dementia. Through his interdisciplinary and international collaborations, he continues to advance AI-driven approaches that aim to make healthcare systems more intelligent, secure, and accessible.

Research Interests

My research interests lie at the intersection of artificial intelligence and healthcare, with a focus on Genetic Algorithms, Machine Learning, and Synthetic Data Generation. I am particularly interested in the application of these computational approaches within Medical Informatics and Health Data Mining to improve clinical decision-making and predictive modeling.
