Biography
Immanuel Darkwa is currently an Assistant Professor at the School of History and Geography, University of Limerick, Ireland. He is also Co-Director of UL's Professional Diploma in Climate Adaptation & Sustainability. He obtained his PhD from Trinity College Dublin, investigating Innovation Management models and ecosystems in Humanitarian and Development contexts. Immanuel is a 2015 recipient of the prestigious Irish Research Council Employment Based PhD award. He received his MSc in Architectural Engineering and Sustainability, as well as a BSc in Architecture and Urban Planning from the Technical University of Dortmund, Germany. Before joining the University of Limerick, he worked as a Tutor, Research Assistant, Lecturer & Module Coordinator, as well as Teaching and Research Fellow on separate occasions at the Department of Geography, Trinity College Dublin. Immanuel has also served as an Associate Lecturer at School of History & Geography at Dublin City University, the Department of Management and the Department of Computer Science at the Technological University of Dublin. His research and teaching focus is at the intersection of Physical and Human Geography. Often described as Integrated (Integrative) Geography, it is the branch of geography that describes and explains the spatial aspects of interactions between human individuals or societies and their natural environment and natural systems. This crucially incorporates the study of innovative approaches and solutions involving weather and climate, ecosystems and biomes, and the impacts of climate change and anthropogenic factors on our physical environment. Immanuel’s career goal is to become a world-class researcher in this space, which includes the Geographies of Innovation and Climate and Environmental Geography. His research works have appeared in top-tier international refereed journals. Immanuel has presented at several international conferences around the world and is a reviewer for three reputable international journals. He previously and currently serves as co-investigator to several research grants and applications and has received reputable awards including two Irish Research Council Employment Based Postgraduate Award. He is also a 2022 recipient of EU Climate KIC award for 'CALL TO ACTION: EIT RIS Matchmaking Innovation Market, 2022'. Immanuel is Co-PI on the EIT Climate KIC project REGREEN Croatia - Shaping a 'Living Lab as a Service' model for Nature-based Climate Solutions. Immanuel also has Start-Up experience, where he has successfully transitioned research-led technologies into an enterprise. He is a recipient of the prestigious Competitive Start Fund in Life Sciences from Enterprise Ireland. He has performed consulting roles for both government and international non-governmental organisations, including UNICEF in Ireland, Croatia and Kosovo.
