Dr McCarthy's primary focus of research centres on the challenges aligned with an increasingly ageing, and age diverse, workforce. She is a Global Research Associate with the Sloan Center on Aging and; Work at Boston College, and co-director of the Age in the Workplace Research Network (AWR-net) which is an international network of researchers seeking to address issues associated with age, generations and diversity at work. Her other research interests include the social psychology of prejudice at work, multi-level learning, and third age entrepreneurship. Dr McCarthys research has attracted financial support from, inter alia, the Fulbright Commission, the Irish Research Council, the European Institute of Innovation and Technology, and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, and the. She has published a number of books and book chapters, and the findings of her research in a number of peer-reviewed outlets (including ABS 4*) and presented at numerous national and international conferences. She has served as a keynote speaker for Teachers College, Columbia University, the Industrial and Organizational Psychology Association of Colorado (IOPAC), the Portland Industrial and Organizational Psychology Association (PIOPA), the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) and the Irish Association of Pension Funds (IAPF). She served on the editorial board of Work, Aging and; Retirement, and acts as a reviewer for the Journal of Occupational and Organizational Psychology, International Journal of Human Resource Management, Human Resource Management Journal, Journal of Management Studies, European Association of Work and Organizational Psychology, Personnel Review, Social Behavior and Personality: An International Journal, European Journal of Training and Development and the Irish Journal of Management. Dr McCarthy was named as Outstanding Reviewer at the Emerald Publishing Literati Awards, 2017.
Dr McCarthy has extensive experience in teaching and supervision at undergraduate, postgraduate, executive and post-experience levels, as well as working with community-based and youth-reach education and training programmes.Her main areas of teaching include: Organisational Behaviour; Leadership Development; Human Resource Development; Human Resource Analytics; Research Methods; Research and Professional SkillsAs a result of student evaluations and peer observation through the Centre for Teaching and Learning, she was nominated for the University of Limericks Excellence in Teaching Award (in 2009 and 2011) as well as the Shannon Consortiums Regional Excellence in Teaching Award (2012). In 2016, she received the KBS Faculty Development Teaching Award and in 2017, the University Forum for Human Resource Development (UFHRD) Teaching and Learning Prize. She was awarded a Case Centre Scholarship for case writing in 2018.
Dr Jean McCarthy BBS PhD MCIPD is an Associate Professor A in Organisational Behaviour at the Kemmy Business School (KBS), University of Limerick.
Jean is a former Fulbright Scholar at Colorado State University (2012-3) and Ambassador for the Fulbright Commission in Ireland. She has been a visiting lecturer at Colorado State University (2015), at Teacher's College, Columbia University (2015), and a visiting case method scholar at Harvard Business School (2019). She is currently Adjunct Professor in Organisational Behavior at the International University of Monaco.
Jean has extensive experience in teaching and supervision at undergraduate, postgraduate, executive and post-experience levels, as well as working with community-based and youth-reach education and training programmes. Jean is a multi award winning teacher and teaching case writer, and was named a National Teaching Hero in 2021 by the National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education.
Beyond her core interests in multi-level teaching, learning and development, Jean's focus of scholarly research centres on understanding organisational attitudes and behaviour which promote a more inclusive and sustainable workplace. Jean is a Global Research Associate with the Sloan Center on Aging and; Work at Boston College, and co-director of the Age in the Workplace Research Network (AWR-net). She is also a member of the European Centre for the Study of Hate and the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership Network.
