Dr. Jill Murphy Jill is a Registered General Nurse (RGN), who was awarded the Chief Executive Officer Award from the Irish Minister for Health, Mr. Michael Noonan. I have extensive clinical, managerial and educational experience in the disciplines of general and gerontological nursing. I am a graduate of Trinity College Dublin (MSc in Gerontological Nursing), University College Cork (Post Graduate in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education), Case Western University (Certificate in Appreciative Inquiry) and Queen Margaret University, UK (PhD). Extensive clinical experience was gained whilst undertaking my MSc in acute, rehabilitation, community and long term care units for older persons at Mercers Institute for Successful Ageing; St. James Hospital Dublin
I am an Associate Professor in the Department of Nursing and Midwifery, University of Limerick, teaching at both undergraduate and post graduate level (Levels 8-10). My passion lies in the area of programme and curriculum design in collaboration with other healthcare professionals and clinical partners.
My experience to date includes leading the interdisciplinary team in the design, development and facilitation of the first Nurse/Midwife prescribing programme, in HSE West. I have completed a number of terms as Director of undergraduate and post graduate programmes in the Department of Nursing and Midwifery; with extensive experience in programme design ranging from undergraduate to professional doctorate level and curriuclum design including nursing older adult, chronic illness, leadership and person centred care modules. As a member of the Quality and Accreditation Committee and programme director I led, prepared and submitted a number of curriculum reviews and accreditations through University of Limerick Academic Committees and Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland.
I value working collaboratively and served on a number of committees including Education and Health Sciences (EHS) Research Scientific Committee, Department of Nursing and Midwifery International Commitee, Student Status Committee and Chair of the Recognised Prior Learning Committee. Engaging as a member of the Education and Health Sciences (EHS) Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Committee and Chair of the Department of Nursing and Midwifery Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Committee affords the opportunity to advocate for equal opportunities, appreciate diversity and ensure all individuals flourish grounded in social justice.
In addition to my role in the University, I serve on a number of international organisations including the European Sigma Europe Communications commitee and Nurse and Pharmaceutical Care (NUPhaC) committee. I am a member of the first Irish Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI) Society of Nursing which is a long established global organisation. I received an award at the 6th Sigma European Region Conference.
Jill's research interest is in the complexity of health and social care systems for ageing populations whilst maintaining dignity for each individual. My career vision is to advance the education of nurses and work collaboratively with other health care professionals to promote a healthcare system where the dignity of each individual is valued and appreciated.
