Biography

John Garvey is a Professor of Finance at the Kemmy Business School, University of Limerick. He teaches undergraduate and postgraduate courses in insurance and finance. Professor Garvey received his PhD in finance from Dublin City University. A graduate of the University of Galway (BA, MA). Prior to joining the Kemmy Business School, Professor Garvey worked as a commercial underwriter with Aviva Insurance Group. His teaching focuses on financial institutions and markets with a particular focus on reinsurance and alternative risk transfer.  His research interests include topics within sustainable finance and insurance. In 2014, Professor Garvey led research that resulted in the completion of a spinout company called FarmHedge which designed digital tools for coordinating trading decisions in agricultural markets. This technology secured the Irish Times Innovation Award and was sold to Austrian agribusiness, RWA in 2024. Professor Garvey currently leads BIOFIN-EU, an EU funded project that explores how to redirect financial flows towards the protection and restoration of biodiversity.
