Research InterestsMy research interests lie in the areas of resource recovery and remediation of mine leachates / environmental sustainability / climate change / water / wastewater / GHG emissions / circular economy / contaminant hydrogeology / soil science / life cycle assessment / agricultural biotechnology.
John is course director for the BE and ME programmes in civil engineering and is year 2 civil engineering tutor. He is also academic leader for a number of modules delivered using problem-based learning, including Hydrology and Water Engineering, and Water Management Systems. He also teaches on the MSc programme in Sustainable Resource Management and is academic leader for the multi-disciplinary wastewater management (effluent control) module in the Department of Chemical Sciences.John has developed module content and materials for all of his taught modules.
John Murnane is a chartered civil engineer, lecturer and researcher at the School of Engineering. He holds a BE (civil engineering) from UCC, an MSc from Heriot Watt University, and a PhD from NUI Galway.
John's research interests lie in the areas of resource recovery and remediation of agricultural, industrial and mine water waste streams / environmental sustainability / climate change / water / wastewater / GHG emissions / circular economy / soil science / life cycle assessment. He is a strong advocate of student centred learning where he practices problem based and active classroom learning. John is author / co-author of several peer reviewed scientific and conference papers and has established many collaborations with both industry and academia. He is currently PI/CO-PI on a number of European (ERA-MIN) and national (EPA) projects, and is a peer reviewer for a number of international journals.
