John Twomey is currently an assistant professor at the University of Limerick whose work focusers on the intersection between forensic/cognitive psychology and Human-Computer Interaction. He is an early career researcher who defended his PhD thesis at University College Cork in February 2026. His thesis was titled “Socially (De)constructing Deepfakes: Understanding socio-technical interests and concerns in deepfake media”. The thesis involved the development of measures and psychoeducation targeting perpetrators of technology facilitated gendered violence (TFGV) , namely deepfake intimate imagery.  He has experience in conducting experimental, qualitative and psychometric work involving the study of deepfake media in political misinformation and gendered abuse. His research interests at present include further work on devising psychological measurements and psychoeducation intervention for the acceptance of TFGV myths among young men and applying misinformation scholarship to the study of the manosphere and TFGV.
