Research Interests

My field of research is comparative politics and Irish politics. I am interested in how radical political movements interact with the institutions of liberal democratic states. My current research examines Sinn Féin’s transformation into an electorally competitive force on both sides of the Irish border since the Great Recession. It compares the party’s organization and strategies in North to the South, and situates its unique all-island structure – one party operating across two jurisdictions – within a broader comparative analysis of anti-systemic parties of the European left.

I am also the Principal Investigator of a research project on Federalism in a United Ireland, which explores how federal reform could address the interests of a disaffected unionist minority in the context of Irish reunification. The project draws on comparative insights from European cases where federal arrangements have been used to manage ethnic and regional divisions, assessing their relevance for constitutional design and political stability in a future United Ireland.

Beyond this main research agenda, my publications have examined radical left activism, the far right in Ireland, libertarianism, youth unemployment policy, and the role of the ‘revolving door’ in Irish politics.
