Dr Kyriakos I. Kourousis is an Associate Professor at the School of Engineering of the University of Limerick (UL). He also serves as the Director of Postgraduate Research & Education in the Faculty of Science & Engineering. He was previously the Programme Director for UL's postgraduate and undergraduate programmes in airworthiness.
His research expertise is in the areas of metal plasticity of conventional and additively manufactured (3D printed) metals, working on modelling and characterisation of their mechanical behaviour under complex loading. He also conducts research in airworthiness management and engineering, with a focus on aviation safety regulations and standardisation. Associate Professor Kourousis leads the following research groups in the School of Engineering:
Associate Professor Kourousis has 24+ years of experience in the fields of aircraft maintenance, airworthiness, quality control and assurance, engineering and technical/logistics support of aircraft and aeronautical equipment, as an Aeronautical Engineer Officer (Major ret.) of the Hellenic Air Force (HAF). He was formerly the manager of the Mirage 2000/-5 airframe/systems airworthiness, quality control and assurance programme, as well as the fleet fatigue monitoring/structural integrity programme, at HAF Support Command. He has also served as aircraft maintenance officer and quality control and assurance officer for Mirage 2000 aircraft at 114 Combat Wing (Tanagra air base).
He is a registered Chartered Engineer (CEng) with the UK Engineering Council and a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society (FRAeS). Associate Professor Kourousis is a member of the Society's Airworthiness & Maintenance Specialist Group, where he has previously held the position of Chair, and a member of the Structures & Materials Specialist Group.
Associate Professor Kourousis is an Associate Editor in the Aeronautical Journal, published by Cambridge University Press on behalf of RAeS, and in the SAE International Journal of Aerospace. He also serves as a member of the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Structural Integrity, published by Emerald in partnership with the European Aeronautics Science Network, and of the Advisory Board of the Transportation Research Interdisciplinary Perspectives journal, published by Elsevier.
In 2015, UN member states agreed to 17 global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all. This person’s work contributes towards the following SDG(s):
