I am currently accepting PhD candidates interested in exploring the intersections of translation, minoritised cultures, and literature and/or digital media. I welcome projects that engage with topics such as the role of video games, literature, and other creative industries in the preservation and revitalisation of lesser-represented languages and cultures. Particularly, I am interested in research grounded in Translation Studies which aims to incorporate corpus-based methodologies, digital humanitie, and the study of translation within global cultural flows, including its role in cultural diplomacy.

Biography

I joined the University of Limerick as an Assistant Professor in August 2022, after graduating with my PhD in Translation Studies in April of the same year. At UL, I am coordinator for the core final-year Spanish modules in the BA Arts and BA Applied Languages (SP4147, SP4148, SP4247, SP4248).
 
My doctoral research, which applied a corpus-based approach to the translation of Galician fiction into English, was awarded with no ammendments and received the Association of Hispanists of Great Britain and Ireland Publication Award. My first monograph Translation Landscapes: Galician Fiction in English in the Twenty-first Century (Legenda, 2025), expands on this corpus-based literary analysis while also contributing to debates on translation flows and the global literary market.

I have published in leading journals such as Perspectives, International Journal of Iberian Studies, and Translation in Society. I have also engaged in several collaborative projects, from co-founding Project DaRT while I was a postgraduate student in UCC, to being academic partner in international projects such as the Projeto Livro Galego (PI Dr Roberto Samartim) or Stateless Cultures in Translation and Changing the Translation Landscape from Multilingual Spain (PI Dr Olga Castro). Continuing with my ongoing collaboration with Dr Olga Castro, we are currently working on a co-authored monograph entitled Stateless Literatures in Translation: Cultural Diplomacy and the Publishing Industry from Multilingual Spain to the Anglosphere (2026). Together with Dr Olivia Hellewell, we are also co-chairing a panel on translation and soft power at the EST Congress in Leeds (2025) and co-editing a special issue on the topic for Target: International Journal of Translation Studies (2027)
 
Alongside my academic work, I have over a decade of experience as a translator in the creative industries, with a focus on video game localisation. My second major project brings together these two aspects of my trajectory so far to investigate how video games and community-led digital practices support the transmission and revitalisation of minoritised langauges and cultures.

 

Research Interests

My research examines how minoritised languages and cultures navigate (in)visibility, identity, and resilience in global contexts, using translation both as a conceptual framework and a hands-on practice.  I am especially interested in how translation intersects with the creative industries, and my current research spans four key areas:

  • The dynamics of translation and internationalisation in globalised societies, including their implications for soft power and cultural diplomacy.
  • The participation of minoritised cultures in global creative markets, particularly in literature and digital games.
  • Corpus-based and computational methods for analysing large-scale textual data.
  • The role of video games as spaces for translation, localisation, and cultural representation.
