Biography

Mairead is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Nursing and Midwifery, Faculty of Education and Health Sciences, University of Limerick. She is a graduate of the University of Limerick (MSc 2014; BSc 2005), University of Galway (PGDip Clinical Education 2011) and a Registered General Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (St Vincent's Hospital Dublin 1999).

Mairead is a recipient of the UL Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching and currently lectures on the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in the department. Mairead has significant experience in nursing education, particularly in clinical skills pedagogies and simulation-based education and is a founding member of the national group Clinical Skills Network Ireland. Prior to UL, Mairead worked with the Health Service Executive as a Clinical Nurse Specialist, with a background in critical care, respiratory and cardiac nursing.

Mairead is an active member of the Health Research Institute at UL. Her research activity is grounded in nursing practice and education, and focuses on topics such as health equity, reasonable adjustments in healthcare, simulation-based education and implementation science. Mairead has a strong portfolio of peer-reviewed publications and regularly disseminates at national and international conferences. Most recently her doctoral work is focused on the implementation of reasonable adjustments in hospitals for people with intellectual disability. Mairead has an established record of success as a co-applicant on various funding awards from The National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education; National Digital Learning Repository; Health Service Executive/Office of the Nursing and Midwifery Service Director; Health Implementation Science and Technology @UL and PPI @UL. Mairead is currently a member of the Department's Implementation Science Research Focus Group and the Intellectual Disability Research Focus Group.
