Research Interests

Marie Parker-Jenkins is Professor of Education in the Department of Education and Professional Studies, researching issues of social justice with particular reference to ¿race¿ and ethnicity. Before having an academic career in the UK, she taught in Bermuda, Canada and Australia where she obtained practical knowledge of children from culturally diverse backgrounds. She is the author of over 100 publications including books, reports and journal articles. Her research has included study of the expansion of religious schools, particularly those based on an Islamic and Jewish ethos; and in her consultancy capacity, she has provided workshops on such subjects as citizenship, community and identity. She has taught in five universities before coming to Limerick, and her current research is concerned with responding to diversity within the Irish context

Biography

Marie Parker-Jenkins is Professor of Education in the School of Education, University of Limerick, and Co-Director of the Research Centre for Education and Professional Practice. Before having an academic career in the UK, she taught in Bermuda, Canada and Australia where she obtained practical knowledge of working with children from culturally diverse backgrounds and issues of educational administration. She has taught in seven universities and the overall theme of her research is that of Social Justice, drawing on human rights law, issues of ethnicity and school leadership which she has published in over 100 books, articles and conference papers. Her doctoral research involved study at the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg where she researched litigation related to education policy. This led to publications on children s rights and the implications for professional practice, and she has given a number of international keynote addresses related to this area of study. Similarly, she has assumed positions as visiting professor and academic scholar in residence at James Cooke University, Australia; Uppsala University, Sweden; and the University of Warwick, UK. She has also provided workshops on leadership, citizenship, community and identity for public sector employees, for example, in police training schools. Her recent books focused on critical pedagogy and development education at local and global level (Peter Lang 2012, co-author Mags; and the expansion of faith schools, particularly those based on an Islamic and Jewish ethos (IoE, Uni. of London Press, 2015).andnbsp; andnbsp;
