Michael English obtained a first-class honours degree in Mathematics and Statistics from University College Cork in 1996. He received an MSc by research in Computer Science in 1999 and PhD in Computer Science in 2007, both from the University of Limerick. He currently works as an Associate Professor in the Computer Science and Information Systems Department.
He is an Academic Director of the ICT Learning Centre, course director for the department’s very successful MSc in Software Engineering and he sits on the course board of the BSc in Computer Science. He lectures in computer science, object-oriented programming, software evolution, software quality and software engineering and has been involved in the design of undergraduate and postgraduate courses.
His research interests span software engineering and computer science education. Within software engineering his interests are mainly in the areas of software metrics, software quality, source code clone detection, software evolution, software refactoring, the analysis of source-code and the use of machine learning models in software engineering. His interests in computer science education focus on examining the difficulties early undergraduate students have in learning computer programming.
