Personal profile

Biography

Oleksandr Galychyn is a researcher in sustainable mobility and transport behaviour at the University of Limerick. He contributes to the ISCycle2 programme, including a scoping review on cycling and socioeconomic disadvantage and an empirical study on electric-bike ownership, modal share, and commuting behaviour in Irish cities. He is also preparing for the SEAI-funded Bike Library 3 — Workplaces project, beginning in early 2026, which will evaluate workplace e-bike trials and strategies to support a shift from car use to active travel. He previously worked in ecological economics and macroeconomic systems analysis, gaining experience in environmental impact assessment, resource-use evaluation, and environmental–economic modelling. He has also developed a specific interest in the environmental impacts of electric bikes, particularly from a life-cycle and end-of-life perspective.

Research Interests

Oleksandr Galychyn’s research focuses on sustainable mobility and active travel, with particular interest in understanding why people choose to cycle, the factors that influence electric-bike uptake, and how workplace and community interventions can encourage a shift from car use to cycling. He is also interested in transport equity, especially how socioeconomic disadvantage affects access to cycling. In addition, he is interested in the environmental aspects of electric bikes, including life-cycle impacts, repairability, end-of-life options, emissions implications, and how travel patterns and routes influence their overall environmental performance.
