My research interests include: The use of digital technologies in schools, teachers' professional digital competence and digital practices STEM Education, Reflective practice in initial and continuing professional development in Teacher Education
Professor McGarr's research and teaching interests are in the areas of Educational Technology, Reflective Practice in Teacher Education and STEM Education. He is the former head of the School of Education and a former course director of the Masters in ICT in Education and the Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Technology). He is also a former recipient of the University's Excellence in Teaching award and has published a number of studies in relation to his teaching work. His other research work has mainly focused on STEM education in Schools, the adoption of ICT in schools and reflective practice and teachers' thinking. He is currently project director of the national longitudinal study exploring the roll-out of the new Framework for Junior Cycle in Irish post-primary schools.
