Biography

J Paul McCutcheon BCL, LLM, LLD is a Professor of Law at the University of Limerick. A graduate of University College, Dublin, he joined UL in 1983 as an assistant lecturer in Law. He has held visiting appointments in Australian National University, University of Kansas, University of Victoria, University of Canterbury and University of Malaya. He served as Head of the School of Law (2002-2007) and Vice President Academic and Registrar of UL (2007-2017).

 

His publications include Criminal Liability (Dublin: Round Hall Sweet & Maxwell, 2nd ed,  2022) (with F McAuley); Byrne and McCutcheon on the Irish Legal System (7th ed., Dublin, Bloomsbury, 2020) (with R. Byrne, L Cahillane and E Roche-Cagney); The Larceny Act 1916 (Dublin, Round Hall Press, 1988); and The Confiscation of Criminal Assets: Law and Procedure (Dublin: Round Hall Sweet & Maxwell, 1999) (with Professor D Walsh). He has also published extensively in journals in Ireland, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, France, Australia and North America. The National University of Ireland awarded him the degree of Doctor of Laws on the basis of his published works in 2003.

 

He has acted as a consultant to the Law Reform Commission (2003) and to the Inspector of Prisons and Places of Detention (2002-2005). He was a member of the member of the Expert Group to Advise the Minister for Justice on the Codification of the Criminal Law (2003-2004).
