Research Interests

Pepijn's interests revolve around the support of (mental) health interventions using machine learning and mobile ICT. He is particularly interested in tools for intelligent care provider support. Another area of interest is the assessment of user context and behaviour such as to inform the delivery of intervention specific information exactly at the right time. Pepijn's research has been supported by the following grants:

Teaching Interests

My teaching interests reflect my broad interest in electronic engineering and computer engineering with modules ranging from basic electronics to analogue IC design (undergraduate and masters level) and programming. Currently, I am responsible for design and delivery of a module on Android programming.

Biography

Pepijn van de Ven is a Professor in the department of Electronic and Computer Engineering at the University of Limerick (UL), Director of the D2iCE research group (https://d2ice.ie/) and Past-President of the International Society for Research on Internet Interventions (https://isrii.org/). Pepijn received an MSc in Electronic Engineering from the Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands in 2000. He subsequently worked for Philips in the Eindhoven based Philips Research Laboratories as a Research Scientist. There he invented, designed and developed analogue/RF building blocks for 3G mobile telecommunication sets.
In 2002 Pepijn obtained an IRCSET award to pursue a PhD at the University of Limerick on the Identification and Control of Marine Vehicles Using Artificial Intelligence Techniques . After finalizing his PhD in 2005, Pepijn secured several postdoctoral positions in the area of smart technologies for ambient assisted living before becoming a Senior Research Fellow in 2007. As a Senior Research Fellow, Pepijn conducted research in large international consortia in the area of internet interventions.
In 2018 he joined UL's teaching staff as a Senior Lecturer and is Course leader of UL's National MSc in Artificial Intelligence. Pepijn has secured numerous national and international research awards totalling more than 2.2 million in funding to UL and is currently UL lead on the UK MRC funded PROACTIVE project with King's College London, the University of São Paulo and the University of Bristol. Pepijn s research interests are the application of artificial intelligence and machine learning in internet interventions with a particular focus on the area of eMental Health. Furthermore Pepijn has a keen interest in mobile app development for the Android OS.
