Biography

Ronan Whiston is a computational biologist and bioinformatician with expertise spanning genomics, transcriptomics, metagenomics, proteomics, and multi-omics data integration. He holds a PhD in Immunology and Computational Biology from Trinity College Dublin, an MSc in Bioinformatics from Dublin City University, and a BSc (Hons) in Genetics from University College Dublin. With over eight years of post-qualification research experience across academic, clinical, and commercial settings in Ireland, the United Kingdom, and the Caribbean, he has developed a distinctive profile that combines deep computational expertise with strong biological and biomedical domain knowledge.

He is currently a Teaching Assistant on the Immersive Biosciences module (BY4211) at the University of Limerick, where he supports undergraduate instruction in Excel, R, and Python for biological data analysis, protein structure analysis using VMD and PyMOL, and DNA sequence analysis using Expasy, NCBI, and EMBL-EBI resources.

His research interests centre on the application of machine learning, explainable AI, and statistical modelling to complex biological datasets, with a particular focus on microbiome science, infectious disease, antimicrobial resistance, and One Health. He has led and contributed to studies integrating 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing, shotgun metagenomics, whole-genome sequencing, RNA-seq transcriptomics, and LC-MS mass spectrometry proteomics, consistently applying reproducible, pipeline-driven analytical approaches in R and Python across HPC and cloud computing environments.

During his postdoctoral fellowship at Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine in St. Kitts, he managed a concurrent portfolio of six research projects addressing veterinary infectious disease, bovine microbiome dynamics, antimicrobial resistance, and forensic metagenomics. He co-supervised a DVM/MSc by Research student and delivered faculty-wide training in metagenomic sequencing methods. Prior to this, as a research fellow at King's College London, he served as joint first author on a large-scale real-world evidence study integrating gut microbiome and metabolomics data from 2,561 COVID-19 participants, published in Scientific Reports, and contributed to a multi-omics post-COVID-19 study published in The Lancet Digital Health. His doctoral research at Trinity College Dublin produced a joint first-author publication in Scientific Reports characterising genomic variants associated with bull fertility using GWAS and whole-exome sequencing.

He has 14 peer-reviewed publications and has presented at international conferences including the European Congress of Immunology 2024 and the Irish Society of Immunology Annual Conference 2025. He is the founder of ROMICS, a registered bioinformatics consultancy providing bespoke omics data analysis to academic and industry clients in Ireland.

His ORCID iD is 0000-0003-4980-888X.
