Tina Joshi

Dr Tina Joshi is Associate Professor of Molecular Pathology at the University of Limerick. Her research focuses on antimicrobial resistance (AMR), infection prevention and control, healthcare-associated infections, and the development of rapid molecular diagnostic technologies.

She leads an interdisciplinary research programme spanning molecular microbiology, engineering and translational medicine to develop innovative diagnostic technologies and improve the prevention and management of infectious diseases. She has a particular interest in Clostridioides difficile, antimicrobial and biocide resistance, and works closely with healthcare providers, industry and international collaborators to translate research into practical solutions.

Prior to joining the University of Limerick, Dr Joshi was Associate Professor of Molecular Microbiology at the University of Plymouth (2022–2026), following her appointment as Lecturer in Molecular Microbiology (2017–2022). During this time, she established a research programme focused on antimicrobial resistance, infection prevention and control, Clostridioides difficile, and rapid molecular diagnostics, working closely with clinical, industrial and academic collaborators. She also gained national recognition for excellence and innovation in clinical microbiology education.

Dr Joshi completed her PhD in Microbiology at Cardiff University (2008–2012) before undertaking interdisciplinary postdoctoral research across the Schools of Pharmacy and Engineering at Cardiff University (2012–2017). Her postdoctoral research focused on the development of microwave-enhanced point-of-care diagnostic technologies for the rapid detection of bacterial pathogens, resulting in two international patents and underpinning her subsequent research in translational molecular diagnostics.

Tina is Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Medical Microbiology, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology (FRSB), Fellow of the Institute of Biomedical Science (FIBMS) and Senior Fellow of Advance HE (SFHEA). She provides international leadership in microbiology through editorial, professional and policy roles, contributing to national and international initiatives on antimicrobial resistance, including representation at the 79th United Nations General Assembly High-Level Meeting on Antimicrobial Resistance. 

She serves on UK national and international grant assessment panels and peer review colleges, and provides expert peer review for major research funding organisations and international scientific journals.

She welcomes collaboration with academic, clinical and industry partners interested in antimicrobial resistance, infection prevention, molecular diagnostics and translational microbiology, as well as enquiries from prospective postgraduate researchers.

Dr Joshi's research focuses on antimicrobial resistance (AMR), infection prevention and control, healthcare-associated infections, and the development of rapid molecular diagnostic technologies.

Her interdisciplinary research integrates molecular microbiology, engineering and translational medicine to investigate microbial adaptation to antibiotics and disinfectants, develop rapid molecular and biosensor-based diagnostic technologies, and improve the prevention and management of infectious diseases. Her particular interests include Clostridioides difficile, antimicrobial and biocide resistance, point-of-care diagnostics, implementation science, behavioural science, and arts and health approaches to improving infection prevention and antimicrobial stewardship

Tina provides academic leadership in curriculum development, programme design and research-informed education across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in microbiology, molecular pathology and biomedical sciences.

She has led the design and delivery of innovative, research-informed curricula and supervised undergraduate, Master's and doctoral research projects. She holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice (PGCAP) and is a Senior Fellow of Advance HE (SFHEA). Her educational scholarship includes research on equality, diversity and inclusion in bioscience, medicine and microbiology education.

Her contributions to clinical microbiology education have been recognised through multiple awards for innovation and inspirational teaching, including recognition at the Times Higher Education Awards.
