Biography

Thomas Newe (BEng., PhD, MIEEE) was born in Westmeath, Ireland in 1967. He received his Honours Degree in Computer Engineering in 1991. Following this, he worked as a senior software engineer with The Microelectronics Applications Centre (MAC), Ireland. He was awarded his PhD in 2003 from the University of Limerick for work on Formal Verification Logics for use in security protocol design.andnbsp; He is currently a Professor in the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering at the University of Limerick, group leader of the IoT/WSN Security activities in the Optical Fibre Sensors Research Centre (www.ofsrc.ul.ie) and the Centre for Robotics and Intelligent Systems (www.cris.ul.ie), and an FI in Lero (www.lero.ie) The SFI National Research Centre for Software. Tom sits on the board of Cyber Ireland (www.cyberireland.ie) and leads the Cyber Security industry upskilling activities in UL with the Cyber Skills (www.cyberskills.ie) HEA HCI Pillar 3 initiative. He has graduated 17 PhD students in the general area of Security for Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) and currently, he has 6 registered students working in the areas of secure IoT for marine systems, medical environments, and Smart Manufacturing.andnbsp; His areas of research include: OT Security, Security for I4.0, Cyber-Physical System (CPS) Security, IoT, Wireless Sensor Networks, Operating Systems, Cryptography/Encryption Algorithms, Data Security, Network Security and Formal Verification Methods.
