Dr Uzair Shabbir, MD, MICGP, Cert in Lifestyle Medicine

Dr Uzair Shabbir is a General Practitioner specialising in the integration of physical activity and lifestyle interventions for chronic disease management in primary care. Currently a CSCST Fellow, his work combines clinical practice with research into innovative strategies for improving patient outcomes.
Dr Shabbir has extensive experience as a research assistant, having contributed to qualitative studies funded by the Irish College of General Practitioners (ICGP). His research expertise includes qualitative methodologies, clinical audits, and public and patient involvement (PPI), ensuring that community perspectives shape healthcare initiatives. His clinical experience spans diverse roles, including lifestyle medicine clinics, mentoring junior doctors, and teaching medical students and GP trainees.
He is a seasoned presenter and has shared his findings at leading conferences, such as WONCA and the AUDGPI ICGP Annual Scientific Meetings. Dr Shabbir has also been recognised for his contributions, winning awards such as the Dr Micheál Fanning Perpetual Research Award and Best Poster Presentation at the WONCA World Rural Health Conference.
Beyond his clinical and research pursuits, Dr Shabbir actively contributes to his community as Vice Chair of the Kerry Islamic Outreach Society and Chair of the Kerry ICGP Faculty. He is a published author, with works appearing in Archives of Disease in Childhood and FORUM. His interests also include promoting work-life balance and leadership development among medical professionals.
Dr. Uzair Shabbir’s research focuses on the role of physical activity in the prevention and management of chronic diseases within primary care. As a CSCST Fellow and research assistant at the University of Limerick, he is engaged in advancing evidence-based approaches to integrate physical activity into routine general practice. His work aims to improve patient outcomes through lifestyle interventions, with a particular emphasis on promoting physical activity as a cornerstone of chronic disease management.
Dr. Uzair Shabbir has a dedicated interest in medical education, particularly in the context of general practice. He delivers weekly tutorials for GP trainee registrars and provides tutorial sessions and bedside teaching for medical students at the University of Limerick. He has also served as an examiner for clinical assessments and mentors junior doctors, contributing to their clinical and professional development. His teaching activities reflect a commitment to high-quality education and the support of trainees at various stages of their medical careers.
