Biography

Zenobie S. Garrett is an archaeologist specializing in digital approaches to the analysis of landscape and its role in social investment and construction in the ancient world. She is currently a Postdoctoral Researcher on the OS200 project in the Department of History and Geography at the University of Limerick.  She is working with Dr. Catherine Porter to build a research database focused on the documents created during the Ordnance Survey mapping program in the mid-19th century.  OS200 is a 3-year project is jointly funded by the Irish Research Council (IRC) and the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), and the team is composed of a multidisciplinary team from institutions in both Ireland and the UK.Dr. Garrett has worked in Ireland since 2007 when she took part in the reexamination of the Irish National Monument of Dún Ailinne through remote sensing techniques.  She currently serves as the Assistant Director of the archaeological field school excavations. As a landscape archaeologist, Dr. Garrett is interested in understanding why people chose to live where they did despite the challenges they may have faced.  She has worked in Peru, Ireland, France, Oman, and the U.S. to explore the wide variety of living options available to humans and the unique social and environmental challenges involved in the maintenance of wherever people call home, both in the past and today. To answer these questions, she uses archaeological survey and spatial analysis to understand how past groups organized themselves and thought about the landscape around them.  She is also actively involved in teaching and outreach and has experience working in the commercial archaeology sector as well.
