Abstract
The rapid growth of renewable energy technologies has intensified the demand for high-performance energy storage systems with enhanced energy density, power density, and long-term stability. Among various electrode materials, cobalt oxide (Co3O4) has emerged as a promising candidate owing to its high theoretical capacitance, multiple oxidation states, rich redox chemistry, and environmental compatibility. However, the practical application of pristine Co3O4 is hindered by its low electrical conductivity, limited rate capability, and structural degradation during prolonged cycling. This review discusses recent advances in Co3O4-based nanocomposites for hybrid energy storage systems, including supercapacitors, lithium-ion hybrid capacitors, and hybrid battery–supercapacitor devices. Various synthesis strategies, such as hydrothermal, solvothermal, sol–gel, electrodeposition, microwave-assisted, and green synthesis approaches, are critically examined with respect to morphology control and electrochemical performance. The review further highlights the role of carbonaceous materials, conducting polymers, mixed metal oxides, metal sulphides/hydroxides, and heterostructure architectures in improving charge transport, ion diffusion, and cycling stability. Additionally, recent developments in doping and defect engineering, particularly oxygen-vacancy generation and heteroatom incorporation, are discussed as effective routes for electronic structure modulation. Finally, current challenges, future perspectives, and design strategies for next-generation Co3O4-based hybrid electrodes are presented to accelerate the development of sustainable energy storage technologies.
