AN EXPLORATORY STUDY ON GENDER-BALANCE INFLUENCE ON HIRING AND PROMOTION IN CONSTRUCTION COMPANIES

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingConference contributionpeer-review

Abstract

The focus of this study was to investigate the level of impact that equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) legislation focused on gender has on creating an equal opportunity regarding hiring and promotion processes in companies operating in the construction industry. Qualitative data was gathered through semi-structured interviews with managers from two Project Management firms: one in Ireland and one in the United States (US). Findings indicated that in Ireland, there is positive discrimination towards females seeking employment and promotion in the construction industry whereas US participants reported a focus on race/ethnicity but not on gender. The companies involved, appear to have a focus on satisfying external requirements from clients and legislation compliance rather than developing a sustainable EDI approach regarding gender balance that could positively impact on company performance.
