Abstract

Cassia species have been of keen interest in phytochemical and pharmacological research due to their excellent medicinal values. Different classes of natural products, possessing potent physiological and pharmacological activities have been isolated from Cassia nodosa. They include anthracene derivatives, flavonoids and polysaccharides. Some of these compounds have been shown to possess considerable antifertility activity. The present study deals with the isolation, purification of flavonoids in different parts of C. nodosa and their antifertility activity. A new flavonoid kaempferol-7-O-glucoside was identified and characterized and it showed significant antifertility activity. The higher levels of total flavonoids was measured in flowers of C. nodosa (1.39 mg/gdw) and, Similarly higher levels of total qurecetin (F+B) was measured in flowers of C. nodosa (0.42 mg/gdw). Higher levels of total kaempferol(F+B) was measured in flowers of C. nodosa (0.68 mg/gdw). Similarly higher levels of kaempferol-7-O-glucoside were measured in flowers of C. nodosa (0.29 mg/gdw). kaempferol-7-O-glucoside feeding to rats significantly reduced sperm concentration of testes and epididymisdes (P<0.001). The motility of the cauda epididymal sperm was also reduced significantly (P<0.001). The isolate kaempferol-7-O-glucoside reduced the fertility of male rats by 95% (Table 4).
