Abstract
Pianist Yonit Kosovske performed with soprano Tríona Walsh in a concert titled "A Woman's Life and Love" at Mary Immaculate College - Limerick. The programme included nine songs from the 1600s through Contemporary, featuring female composers such as Barbara Strozzi, Margaret Bonds, Amy Beach, Ellen Mandel, and Rebecca Clarke, as well as recent works by local composers Fiona Linnane and Tríona Walsh, in addition to one (token piece) by male composer Eric Whitacre.
In 1830, Adelbert von Chamisso published a cycle of nine poems which he named "Frauen-Liebe und Leben' (A Woman's Love and Life), the poems of which inspired Robert Schumann's song cycle. This recital reimagined von Chamisso's subject matter, exploring contemporary themes of love, domesticity, and motherhood.
This concert programme developed through a collaboration that was part of a 2023 Arts Council Agility Award that Tríona received to explore concert curation and works by female composers.
