Abstract

A model to predict the shape of a stretched membrane which was nearly conformal to an underlying body and distorted by a small surface perturbation, was formulated. A number of models were developed to examine the situation and obtain appropriate asymptotic approximations. The analysis showed that in situations with some degree of symmetry, the results given by simple asymptotic models were in good agreement with numerical simulations.
