Abstract

Fruits are essential in the nutraceutical industry, with the market for these “natural medicines” expanding rapidly each year. Among fruits, berries are particularly important due to their rich source of beneficial phytochemicals such as phenolic acids, flavonoids, tannins, and stilbenes, which offer significant health benefits. Studies show that these compounds possess anti-Alzheimer's, antidiabetic, antiinflammatory, antimicrobial, antineurodegenerative, and anticancer properties. Given these attributes, the consumption of nutraceutical-rich berries has increased, driven by their potential to reduce the risk of pathological conditions such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, inflammation, and aging. Often referred to as “super fruits,” berries contain a high concentration of bioactive compounds like flavonols, flavones, and anthocyanins, which contribute to their health beneficial properties. These fruits, low in calories yet rich in dietary fibers and vitamins, may play a significant role in combating chronic diseases linked to oxidative stress and inflammation. This chapter explores recent research on the nutraceutical and health-promoting effects of berries, highlighting their key components and associated benefits.
