Abstract
A key function of food packaging is the preservation of foodstuffs against physicochemical damage. Petroleum-based polymers have been extensively utilized for decades due to their lightweight nature, low vapor permeability, cost-effectiveness, and ease of processing. However, they contribute to environmental pollution and pose health risks. These concerns have led to increased attention toward biobased polymers. Therefore this chapter has addressed the types of biopolymers, their benefits and drawbacks, as well as emerging approaches to overcome challenges in their application as food packaging.
