    Abstract

This chapter describes the application of optical methods to blood analysis in an effort to yield qualitative and quantitative metrics pertaining to morphological and functional information. A review of the refractive index matching mechanism of blood optical clearing employing immersion techniques is presented. This concept is discussed on the basis of both in vitro and in vivo studies of a wide variety of optical modalities for the enhancement of light penetration into blood. In addition, the diagnostic and prognostic value of such imaging techniques for dynamic blood flow assessment is presented via comparable descriptions of its invasive predecessors.
