Abstract

It is shown that flexural anisotropy has a significant detrimental effect on buckling loads for plates which have one edge free. Approximate closed form solutions are derived and validated in comparison with detailed finite element analysis. Comparisons were made with materials and lay-ups that contain relatively large amounts of flexural anisotropy. The buckling solutions should prove useful in quantifying anisotropic effects and may also be used in optimisation studies.
