Abstract

The principal calcium phosphate salts and their characterization and analysis are described. The chemistry of calcium phosphate cement materials derived from such salts is described, divided on the basis of setting reaction product type, i.e., Apatite forming cements and Brushite forming cements. The principal variables in cement formulation such as powder to liquid ratio, stoichiometry, particle size etc are discussed along with their influence on cement handling, setting and mechanical properties. The main commercial calcium phosphate cement/bone substitute products are described as well as some of the issues associated with comparative characterization methods employed in the literature.
