Abstract
Found in the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book as Can Shee, in the lute song books of John Dowland as 'Can She Excuse My Wrongs?' and containing the dance known as the 'Earl of Essex Galliard', this sprightly tune works beautifully on recorder and harpsichord.
David Gutiérrez Villagómez, recorder
Yonit Kosovske, harpsichord
The Fitzwilliam Virginal Book is so named thanks to its Irish connection: Richard 7th Viscount Fitzwilliam of Merrion (Dublin), a collector and arts patron, acquired the manuscript, sometimes known as Queen Elizabeth's Virginal Book. Fitzwilliam also played harpsichord, was known to have studied with composer Jacques Duphly, and acquired music manuscripts by Domenico Scarlatti and JC Bach.
Limerick Early Music, Now and Then Media, Ltd. and the Embassy of Ireland in Chile present a trans-Atlantic virtual collaboration, produced with the generous assistance from the Embassy of Ireland in Santiago, Chile.
