Abstract

The iconic minimalist masterpiece Canto Ostinato is rendered as an electronic work in which live coding, CV modular synthesis and digital tools explore the works resonance within contemporary electronic music contexts.

Electronic performance by Jurgen Simpson of Canto Ostinato in The Sugar Club, Dublin, on 20th April 2023 for New Music Dublin. Mutating between stark, minimalist structures and unexpected melody underpinned by a landscape of driving rhythms, Dutch composer Simeon ten Holt’s 1977 composition Canto Ostinato is performed at this late evening concert in an hypnotic new rendering for live electronics.

A key work of European minimalism, Canto Ostinato’s interlocking cells unfold in mesmerising patterns that preempt the structures of club culture. Employing computers and modular synthesis, Irish composer Jürgen Simpson connects this compelling and mysterious work to the sound world of contemporary electronic music.
